Launch Your Career in Mining with a School-Based Apprenticeship!
Skillset and Glencore Ulan Coal are offering exciting School-Based Apprenticeships in Mechanical Fitting and Electrotechnology at Ulan Coal, just 30 minutes north of Mudgee. Starting in January 2026, this is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience, earn while you learn and work alongside industry professionals while completing your HSC.
Available Apprenticeships
Certificate III in Electrotechnology
Electricians install, maintain and troubleshoot electrical systems and equipment across the site. They work with high-voltage systems, automation technology, and ensure all electrical components meet safety and operational standards.
Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade
Mechanical Fitters on a mine site are responsible for assembling, maintaining and repairing heavy machinery and mechanical systems. This includes working on pumps, conveyors and hydraulic equipment to ensure smooth and safe operations.
Duties
- Assist qualified tradespeople
- Help troubleshoot and repair equipment faults
- Follow all safety procedures and training requirements
- Attend 1 day at Ulan Coal and 1 day at TAFE per week during school term
- Attend up to 5 days paid training during school holidays and before term begins
Note: Apprentices must maintain their school attendance and keep up with HSC coursework and assessments. Time management and commitment are key to succeeding in both school and your apprenticeship.
Skills and Experience
- Commencing Year 10 or 11 in 2026
- Passionate for the trade and the mining industry
- Strong attention to detail and time management skills
- Committed to safety and willing to complete a Coal Mine Workers Order 43 Medical
- Can travel to the Ulan Coal site (50km north of Mudgee)
- Available for training during school holidays
