Preparing for a Job Interview: Tips to Put Your Best Foot Forward

BY Skillset 22 Mar, 2024

A job interview is your chance to show you’re the right candidate for the role. It’s also an opportunity to learn more about the job and the organisation. Interviews can be formal or informal, and they may take place face-to-face, via video call, or over the phone.

No matter the format, making a great impression is essential. Here are Skillset’s top tips to help you prepare:

1. Research the Organisation

Before your interview, take time to learn about the company. This shows genuine interest and helps you answer questions confidently.

  • Visit the organisation’s website and read about what they do.
  • Check the “About Us” section and learn who the key leaders are.
  • Search online for recent news or articles about the organisation.

2. Review Your Application

Go back to your CV, cover letter, and the job description. Make sure you remember what you wrote and understand the role’s requirements. This is especially important if you’ve applied for multiple jobs.

3. Prepare and Practice Your Responses

Interview questions often cover:

  • Your previous work experience
  • Your qualifications and training
  • Why you want the job
  • How you’d handle certain work situations
  • Salary expectations

Brainstorm your answers, write them down, and practice out loud. The more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll feel.

4. First Impressions Count

If your interview is face-to-face or via video call:

  • Dress professionally and be well-groomed.
  • For video calls, choose a quiet, well-lit space with a tidy background. Remove anything distracting or inappropriate.

5. Prepare Your Own Questions

Interviewers often ask if you have questions. This is your chance to show interest and learn more about the role. Examples include:

  • Can you tell me more about the team I’ll be working with?
  • What does the company value most in its employees?
  • What do people enjoy most about working here?

6. Be Punctual

Arrive 10–15 minutes early for face-to-face interviews. For phone or video interviews, check your tech setup and be ready at least five minutes before the scheduled time.

Preparation helps you feel confident and perform at your best. By researching, practising, and planning ahead, you’ll make a strong impression and increase your chances of success.
