Tips for writing a strong CV

BY Skillset 04 Feb, 2024

A well-written CV is essential when applying for jobs. It’s your chance to showcase your skills, experience, and suitability for the role. But how do you make sure your CV is easy to read and includes the details employers want? Here are six practical tips:

1. Keep It Simple

Choose a clean, easy-to-read font and stick to conventional colours. Avoid bright or unusual designs that distract from the content. Your CV should look professional, but the focus should always be on what’s written, not the design.

2. Start With Your Contact Details

Place your name and contact information at the top of your CV. Include:

  • Your best contact phone number
  • An email address you check regularly

Double-check these details because they are how employers will reach you for interviews.

3. List Your Strengths

After your contact details, include a short section highlighting your strengths. These can be:

  • Personal traits (for example, friendly and approachable)
  • Job-related abilities (for example, strong customer service skills)
  • Technical expertise relevant to the role (for example, proficient in Microsoft Office for admin roles)

This section should give employers a quick snapshot of what you bring to the table.

4. Use a Consistent Format for Job Details

When listing your work experience:

  • Use reverse chronological order (start with your most recent job)
  • Include dates for each role
  • Start with the job title and company name
  • Use bullet points for key responsibilities and achievements
  • Keep descriptions clear and concise

Include paid work, internships, and volunteer experience if relevant.

5. Add Education and Training

After your work history, list your qualifications and training in reverse chronological order. Include:

  • The name of the course or qualification
  • The institution
  • The completion date or expected finish date if you are still studying

6. Check the Details

Your CV represents you, so accuracy matters.

  • Check spelling and grammar
  • Make sure company names are correct
  • Ask a friend to review your CV for a fresh perspective
  • Print a copy to see how it looks before sending

Final Tip

A strong CV is clear, accurate, and tailored to the job you are applying for. Take the time to get it right because it could be the difference between landing an interview or missing out.
