Let’s face it, job interviews can be nerve-racking. They’re an important part of the recruitment process because they give employers the chance to see the person behind the resume.
Feeling nervous is completely normal, but the key is learning how to manage those nerves so you can put your best self forward. Here are Skillset’s top tips for staying calm and confident during an interview.
Why Do We Get Nervous?
Nerves are a natural response to stress. They can show up in different ways—fast breathing, shaky hands, fidgeting, blushing, or sweating. The good news is that these reactions can be managed with a few simple techniques.
Five Common Nervous Responses and How to Handle Them
1. Breathlessness
If you find yourself short of breath, slow down your answers and take a moment before responding. Pausing is okay. A few deep breaths during the interview can help regulate your breathing.
2. Trembling or Over-Expressive Hands
Shaky hands or excessive hand movements can distract from what you’re saying. Try clasping your hands in your lap or resting them on the desk. If they “break free,” gently bring them back to a neutral position.
3. Jittery Legs
If you tend to fidget, cross your legs or ankles under your chair. This position acts as a reminder to keep your legs still.
4. Blushing
Blushing is a common physiological response. While you can’t always stop it, you can minimise its visibility by wearing a collared shirt or clothing that covers your chest.
5. Sweating
To manage sweating:
- Wear breathable clothing and avoid heavy fabrics.
- Place your hands palms-down on your legs to keep them dry.
- Keep tissues handy for your face if needed.
- Ask for a glass of water to stay cool and hydrated.
Remember: Nerves Are Normal
Almost everyone feels nervous in interviews. Recruiters know this and often try to make candidates feel at ease. Don’t dwell on your nerves—focus on answering questions and showcasing your skills, experience, and enthusiasm for the role.
With preparation and these practical tips, you can manage your nerves and walk into your next interview feeling calm and confident.
