A Passion for Building and Community
Celebrating 13 years of marriage with wife Jess, Wes Nixon is a proud father of three daughters and a dedicated supporter of their netball pursuits. His passion for sport extends well beyond the sidelines, as he enjoys playing a variety of sports and regularly cycles with friends. Wes’s journey with DSL Construction began over a decade ago, starting as a subcontractor before stepping into his current role as Project Supervisor. His building career started right after leaving school in 2002, inspired by his father, a local carpenter and building supervisor in Bathurst.
Local Talent, Local Impact
Wes is currently overseeing the renovation of the new Skillset Head Office, a project he considers a privilege due to its iconic status and significance to the community.
“It’s an absolute privilege to be working on such an iconic building and transforming it into the new home for Skillset, by working with local businesses, we help keep jobs and money within the community, strengthening our local economy and building lasting relationships.”
Wes believes that investing in local trades for projects like this is crucial for fostering community growth and sustainability.
Community Collaboration
The Skillset renovation has enabled Wes to connect with new local businesses and trades, building valuable working relationships. He believes the project will significantly benefit the community by providing new spaces for training and supporting local people. Wes’s role involves coordinating trades, managing day-to-day operations, ensuring safety protocols safe followed, and maintaining clear communication with both clients and the community.
A Heritage Space
A standout feature of Wes’s work on the Skillset Head Office renovation is the restoration of the building’s sandstone exterior. This aspect of the project required careful planning and close collaboration with specialist trades, including a stonemason, marking Wes’s first time working with this craft. He embraced the opportunity to learn traditional techniques and appreciated the chance to preserve the building’s historic character.
Expertise
Wes emphasises the importance of having a broad understanding of various trades, which helps him solve problems and communicate effectively across teams. His hands-on approach and willingness to learn from others have been key to the renovation’s success. Wes takes pride in working closely with all trades to deliver a project that everyone involved can be proud of.
Future-Focused Approach
Wes encourages young people considering a career in the trades to embrace continuous learning and growth. He acknowledges that while not every day is easy, the long-term results are rewarding. Projects like the Skillset renovation create valuable opportunities for local trades and apprentices to showcase their skills, build reputations, and gain practical experience from seasoned professionals.
