A Passion for Building and Community

Celebrating 13 years of marriage with wife Jess, Wes Nixon is a proud father of three daughters and an enthusiastic supporter of their netball pursuits. His love for sport goes beyond the sidelines, he enjoys playing a variety of sports and regularly cycles with friends.

Wes’s journey with DSL Construction began more than a decade ago, starting as a subcontractor before stepping into his current role as Project Supervisor. Inspired by his father, a local carpenter and building supervisor in Bathurst, Wes launched his building career straight out of school in 2002.

Local Talent, Local Impact

Wes is currently overseeing the renovation of Skillset’s new Head Office, a project he considers a privilege because of its iconic status and importance to the community.

“It’s an absolute privilege to be working on such an iconic building and transforming it into the new home for Skillset. By partnering with local businesses, we keep jobs and money in the community, strengthen our local economy, and build lasting relationships.”

For Wes, investing in local trades isn’t just good business, it’s essential for supporting community growth and sustainability.

Building Together

The renovation has opened doors for Wes to connect with new local businesses and trades, creating valuable working relationships. He believes this project will deliver long-term benefits by providing spaces for training and supporting local people.

Wes’s role involves coordinating trades, managing day-to-day operations, keeping everyone safe on site, and maintaining clear communication with clients and the community.

Honouring Heritage

One of the standout features of the renovation is restoring the building’s sandstone exterior. This required careful planning and collaboration with specialist trades, including a stonemason, a first for Wes. He embraced the opportunity to learn traditional techniques and appreciated the chance to preserve the building’s historic character.

Expertise and Growth

Wes values having a broad understanding of different trades, which helps him solve problems and communicate effectively across teams. His hands-on approach and willingness to learn have been key to the project’s success.

“Every day is an opportunity to learn something new. That’s what keeps me passionate about what I do.”

Looking Ahead

Wes encourages young people considering a career in the trades to embrace continuous learning and growth. While not every day is easy, the rewards are worth it. Projects like Skillset’s renovation create opportunities for local trades and apprentices to showcase their skills, build reputations, and gain practical experience from seasoned professionals.

At Skillset, we’re proud to work alongside local talent like Wes to create spaces that support people, strengthen communities, and build a brighter future for regional NSW.
