Job Hunting Checklist

BY Skillset 21 Jul, 2024

Are you looking for a new job but are unsure where to start?

Whether you haven’t searched for a job in a long time or are completely new to the workforce, this job hunting checklist will help you get started:

1. Research Job Options

If you’re unsure about the kind of job you want or who is hiring, start by researching. Use the internet to explore potential jobs and companies you’re interested in. Understand the responsibilities of each role and the expected salaries. Check if your current skills match these roles or if you need to close any gaps through courses or skill-building.

Follow companies you’re interested in on social media to stay updated on their latest developments and job openings.

2. Update Your Job Seeking Tools

Create or update your CV/resume to reflect your qualifications and training relevant to the jobs you’re interested in. Ensure your contact details are current. If you’re in a professional field, having a LinkedIn profile that complements your CV/resume is valuable. Review your digital footprint, especially social media profiles, to ensure they present you positively to potential employers. To find out the benefits of having a LinkedIn profile, click here.

3. Get organised

Prepare for your job search by organizing two key things: referees and interview clothes.

  • Referees: Think about who can be your referees. Ideal referees are past managers or senior colleagues who can speak about your recent work performance. If you’re new to the workforce, consider coaches, teachers, or supervisors from volunteer work or internships. Contact potential referees to ask if they would be willing to support your job search.
  • Interview Clothes: Plan what to wear to interviews. If your wardrobe lacks appropriate attire, consider investing in new clothes suitable for interviews and your future job.

4. Start Your Job Search

  • Register on Job Platforms: Sign up on job platforms like SEEK, CareerOne, and others relevant to your field. Set up alerts to receive notifications about job opportunities that match your criteria.
  • Check Job Lists: Regularly review job lists from recruiters and organizations. Some companies frequently update their job listings, so stay informed. Skillset keeps an updated list of job opportunities in the Central West which can be found here.
  • Contact Recruiters: Reach out to recruiters who specialize in your industry or region. They have established relationships with employers and can help you navigate the job market.
  • Cold Call Companies: Contact companies you’re interested in and inquire about job opportunities. Prepare a script to guide your conversation and follow up if needed.
  • Network: Talk to your network, including family, friends, sports teams, and parent groups, about your job search. They might know of upcoming job opportunities in your field.
