Skillset proudly announces Luka Smith as the recipient of the School Based Trainee of the Year award at the 2023 NSW Training Awards – Western Region. The awards ceremony, held in Bathurst on June 8, celebrated Luka’s outstanding achievements and commitment to his training.

Luka began his Certificate II Engineering traineeship in 2022 while completing his Higher School Certificate. Hosted by Hort Enterprises in Orange, NSW, Luka has demonstrated his dedication and maturity throughout his time with the organisation.

Expressing his delight upon receiving the award, Luka said, “Winning a NSW Training Award makes me feel extremely honoured. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent my trade, the people I work with, and those involved in VET training. This recognition validates my hard work and gives me confidence in making valuable contributions to the workplace and community. I am excited about the future and eager to further develop my skills.”

Luka’s nomination for the School Based Trainee category was based on his remarkable work performance and personal attributes. Craig Kemenade, Luka’s supervisor at Hort Enterprises commended his skill and knowledge in Engineering Fabrication, emphasising his invaluable contribution to the team. Mr Kemenade said, “Luka’s commitment to his TAFE coursework sets him apart, as he continuously strives to enhance his skills and knowledge. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Luka actively engages with mentoring groups outside of school and work, leaving a positive impact on the lives of younger students. Luka is a deserving winner who has displayed maturity beyond his age throughout his traineeship as a boilermaker at Horts.”

Jacqualine Sands, Senior Workforce Consultant at Skillset, expressed her pride in Luka’s accomplishments, stating, “I am super proud of Luka and his achievements at work and in the community. He serves as a wonderful role model for students pursuing an SBAT and is a true asset to his workplace. Luka’s respectful demeanor and dedication make him a pleasure to work with and support through his Traineeship.”

Jane McWilliam, General Manager at Skillset, congratulated Luka on his remarkable achievement, stating, “We extend our warmest congratulations to Luka for being named the Western NSW Training Awards School Based Trainee of the Year. This award recognises Luka’s determination and hard work. Luka is an amazing ambassador for Vocational Education and Training and a mentor for fellow apprentices and trainees.”

Skillset had the privilege of supporting two other finalists at this year’s NSW Training Awards – Western Region: Joshua Winter, Finalist for Apprentice of the Year and Ashley Leonard, Finalist for Apprentice of the Year.

Luka will now progress to the next stage of the NSW Training Awards, where he will undergo an interview to represent his state in Sydney this July.
