Project overview

This project focused on managing invasive blackberry in areas where Bursaria spinosa (Native Blackthorn) is present, an essential habitat for the endangered Purple Copper Butterfly.

Found only in the NSW Central Tablelands, the Purple Copper Butterfly relies entirely on this native plant, along with a specific attendant ant, for its survival. Protecting these ecosystems requires a precise and carefully managed approach.

Our approach

Blackberry was often found overgrowing and competing with native vegetation, creating a high-risk environment for accidental damage.

To address this, our team:

• Used targeted, backpack-based application methods
• Worked slowly and methodically in sensitive areas
• Prioritised the protection of Bursaria spinosa at all times
• Navigated steep and challenging terrain with care

Outcome

The project successfully reduced invasive blackberry while preserving critical native habitat, supporting the long-term protection of the Purple Copper Butterfly.

This work demonstrates the importance of precision in environmental restoration and highlights Land Works’ capability to deliver environmentally sensitive projects in complex landscapes.
