Laycee Covington-Gorst: From Trainee to IT Professional

Bathurst local and Skillset Workforce Trainee Laycee Covington-Gorst has won the prestigious 2019 Trainee of the Year at the Western Training Awards Gala Night held at the Orange Ex-Services Club, last Friday.

Bathurst local and former Skillset trainee Laycee Covington-Gorst has achieved incredible success in her career journey. Laycee completed her traineeship in Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology with TAFE NSW while employed by Skillset and hosted by Devro Pty Ltd Bathurst.

Laycee chose an IT traineeship because of her genuine interest in technology and its impact on connecting the world. After finishing her HSC, she was unsure of her career path, but with encouragement from her family, she decided to follow her passion for technology.

“I knew that if I pursued a career in IT, I would be skilled and secure in the future of digitalised workplaces,” Laycee said.

Her determination paid off. Completing her traineeship gave Laycee the skills and confidence to step into the IT industry and build a strong foundation for her career.

Laycee acknowledged the support of Skillset , Devro Pty Ltd and TAFE NSW in helping her start her career and develop advanced skills for IT tasks.

“I started a traineeship in a typically male-dominated industry. I would like to thank Devro and Skillset for helping me pursue my dream career and motivating other females to break stereotypes and consider careers in IT.”

Laycee’s story is a powerful example of how vocational education and training can open doors to exciting careers. Her success also highlights the importance of supporting diversity in technology and encouraging young women to explore opportunities in STEM fields.
