Skillset is proud to partner with Denison College on a Schools Plus-funded pilot program designed to maximise the benefits of work experience for Year 10 students. Running from 2025 to 2027, the initiative is focused on expanding opportunities, connecting students with a broader range of employers and industries, and helping them make informed decisions about their future careers.

Through the partnership, Skillset’s Careers Development Consultant, Cara Curtis, works closely with staff at Kelso High Campus and Bathurst High Campus to source meaningful work experience placements that align with students’ interests, strengths and aspirations.

The program is already creating valuable connections between students and local employers. Businesses and organisations including Clancy Motor Group, Raglan Public School, World Gym and Downer Group have opened their doors to provide hands-on learning experiences and a genuine insight into the world of work.

For students, these opportunities offer more than just workplace exposure. They help develop practical skills, build confidence, improve communication and provide a better understanding of the responsibilities and expectations of different industries.

Importantly, work experience can also act as a pathway to further opportunities. One success story is Hamish, who recently transitioned into the workforce after securing a traineeship with Downer Group, which manages the upkeep of the Kelso High Campus site. His journey highlights the potential for work experience to create real employment outcomes for young people.

As the pilot program continues, Skillset and Denison College remain committed to strengthening links between education and industry, ensuring students have access to meaningful experiences that support their transition from school to training, employment and beyond.
