Where the jobs are.

Covid-19 has made a huge impact on the jobs market across Australia. Some industries have been more affected than others and in some sectors, employment opportunities have decreased whilst others have increased.

In late 2020, the National Skills Commission compiled a list of resilient occupations – or occupations which are likely to experience the most growth in Australia in the coming years. The six industries which have strong employment resilience are:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance
  • Education and Training
  • Construction
  • Mining
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing
  • Administrative and Support Services.

The Central West Job Market.

According to the Australian Government’s Labour Market Information Portal, industries in the Central West which employ the most people are:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing
  • Health Care and Social Assistance
  • Education and Training
  • Retail Trade
  • Construction
  • Manufacturing
  • Public Administration and Safety

The industry which is expected to have the most employment growth over the next 5 years in the Central West is Health Care and Social Assistance. According to the National Skills Commission, the Health Care and Social Assistance sector provides opportunities for both high and low skilled careers, with approximately 41% of its employment requiring a Diploma or higher education level and approximately 24% requiring skills to a Certificate II/III level (The shape of Australia’s post COVID-19 workforce, National Skills Commission, 2020).
