If so, you could be missing out on opportunities. To give your application the best chance of success, you should always tailor your CV or resume to the position you are applying for.

Here are Skillset’s top five tips for customising your CV:

1. Read and Review the Job Advertisement

Start by carefully reading the job advertisement. Make note of any keywords and include them in your CV when describing your experience, skills and qualifications. This helps your application stand out and ensures it aligns with the role requirements.

2. Research the Employer

Take time to learn about the employer. Look at their website, values and culture. If you have experience or training that aligns with these, include it in your CV. Showing that you understand and fit the organisation’s culture can make a strong impression.

3. Tailor Your Introduction

Your CV should begin with an introduction that explains what you can offer the employer. Avoid generic statements. Instead, create an opening tailored to the role by summarising your experience and skills based on the priorities in the job advertisement or position description.

4. Match Your Experience to the Job Opportunity

You do not need to list every job you have ever had. Focus on roles that are relevant to the position you are applying for. Create a section titled Relevant Work History and include:

Job title

Employer name

Dates of employment

Key responsibilities

Achievements

This approach keeps your CV concise and focused.

5. Only Include Relevant Qualifications and Training

Include qualifications and training that relate to the role. For example, if you completed a cooking or photography course and the job does not require these skills, leave them out. The exception is universal training such as first aid, which is valued across many roles.

Customising your CV shows employers that you have taken the time to understand the role and their organisation. It highlights your most relevant skills and experience, increasing your chances of being shortlisted.

Ready to apply for your next role? Start by tailoring your CV to match the job requirements and make your application stand out.

When applying for a job, do you use the same CV or resume for every role?
