Key steps to take when commencing your search for a new job

If you are keen to search for a new job in 2022 but don’t know where to start, here are some pointers for the initial first steps:

Update your resume or CV

Remember that any job application you make will be more successful if you provide an up to date resume or CV. Make sure your CV includes:

  • Your most recent relevant working experience
  • Your relevant qualifications
  • A list of the skills you can offer
  • Current contact details so the employer/recruiter can get in touch with you.

Register on SEEK and other job platforms

Develop a profile on SEEK and other prominent job platforms so you receive a notification email every time a job is advertised that matches your interests and experience. By doing this, you will not only find potential job opportunities, but will also gain an understanding of the job market for roles you are interested in applying for, including:

  • What types of businesses/organisations are hiring?
  • What skills and qualifications are required?
  • What kind of salaries are being offered?

All of this information will be helpful in your job search over time.

Check out the websites of organisations you would like to work for

In addition to registering with SEEK and other key job platforms, many larger organisations post job opportunities in the ‘Career’ sections of their websites, and some even allow potential employees to register their details and receive alerts when a new job opportunity is advertised.

Therefore, it is recommended to:

  • Make a list of any organisations you are interested in working for
  • Visit their websites and review their Careers information
  • If the website allows you to, develop a personal profile /register your details with these organisations so you receive notifications about job opportunities that may interest you.

Speak to your network

Sometimes the best job opportunities aren’t advertised and can be found through your networks, including family and friends. This is called the ‘hidden job market’. If you are keen to find a new job, let trusted people in your network know that you are looking around for job opportunities and the type of work you are interested in. You may be fortunate enough to have a job find you!
