The Don’ts and Don’ts of Job Interviews

A job interview is the perfect opportunity for you to demonstrate you are the right candidate for a particular job. As a result, it is important to present the best version of yourself when asked to attend a job interview.

Many job seeking articles provide tips on what you should do in a job interview, but few focus on behaviours that could possibly damage your chances of winning the job you want. Skillset’s Recruitment Team has had thousands of interactions with job candidates and has seen the very best of behaviours in job interviews but alas – also some behaviours which could be improved!

The following paragraphs provide details on what NOT to do at your next job interview. Specifically, to give the best impression of yourself at your next job interview, try to avoid the following:

Inappropriate attire

When attending a job interview, it is important to wear suitable clothing. In most cases, this means:

  • Wearing business attire or clothing that would be acceptable in the industry the job is in, such as a polo shirt and work pants if you are applying for a job in a trade, or a blouse and dress pants or skirt for an office job.
  • Choosing more conventional clothing – with the exception of some sectors, employers prefer a more conservative approach to dressing. Therefore, avoid revealing or low cut tops, as well as any clothing that is too tight fitting, such as hot pants.
  • Wearing footwear that would be appropriate for the job you are applying for – this means saving your thongs for the beach and sneakers for the gym.
  • Being mindful that facial and unusual piercings may be confronting for your future employer. As a result, consider removing piercings or replacing them with subtle jewelry.
  • Recognising that although tattoos may reflect your personality, they can distract the interviewer from your skills and experience. Given this, contemplate wearing clothing to the interview that minimises the visibility of your tattoos.

Using your mobile phone

Looking at your phone during an interview is not recommended. In fact, doing so may be considered rude and impolite by some interviewers.

During the job interview, you should be focused on answering the questions put to you by the recruiter and demonstrating by your attitude, the questions you ask and the way you are presenting yourself, that you are keen to win the job you have applied for. If you are on your phone, you are not giving the interviewer your complete attention and as a result, you may not be showing sufficient interest in the job on offer. This could disadvantage your chances of winning the role.

Given this, it is best to leave your phone at home, in the car or keep it turned off in your handbag or pocket. And – if by chance you bring your phone with you and you forget to turn it off during the interview and it rings – the most dignified way to deal with this is to apologise to the interviewer, immediately turn your phone off and put it away.

Bringing a coffee to the interview

Another faux pas that should be avoided at all costs – bringing a coffee to a job interview. If you are drinking from a coffee cup during the interview, you are probably not giving the interviewer your 100% attention and therefore not presenting your best self. There are only a few things you should bring to the interview – yourself, any documentation required by the interviewer and possibly a notepad and pen to take notes.

Complaining about your current or former employer

Recruiters understand there are many reasons why candidates choose to apply for a job and some of these may be related to a bad experience with their current or former employer. If you are unhappy with your current or former employer, it is better not to complain about these experiences in the job interview.

Try to keep your attitude positive during the interview discussion and whilst you can touch on some of your reasons for applying for a particular job, it is unadvisable to vent. Essentially, you shouldn’t protest about or criticise your employer. Recruiters are looking for candidates who are enthusiastic and generally optimistic. In light of this, it is better to reserve feedback about your current employer for your exit interview!
