Hort Enterprises Awarded 2020 NSW Training Awards Medium Employer of the Year

BY Skillset 13 Oct, 2020

In a COVID-SAFE event held at Skillset’s Flannery Centre in Bathurst, Skillset Host Employer, Hort Enterprises were announced as the 2020 NSW Training Awards – Medium Employer of the Year. The NSW Training Award proceedings, which are normally held at Sydney’s Town Hall, was presented virtually for the first time in its history.

With over 25 years supporting regional mining and engineering industries, Hort Enterprises has evolved from an engineering support business for the local agricultural sector to become a full-scale engineering operation.

Hort Enterprises were awarded for their high focus on the training of all of their staff, ensuring a highly skilled workforce.  They have also made significant contribution to skills development and youth employment in their regional communities by employing in partnership with Skillset, more than 150 apprentices and trainees through to completion since 1995 with over 70 per cent being retained after completion for at least one to two years.

Hort Enterprises were also celebrated for their recent pathway offering to drought affected farmers in our regions into their casual workforce.

“Winning this award is a huge achievement for the work that Hort have done over the last 25 Years,” said Craig Hort, Managing Director Hort Enterprises.

“A lot of the farmers around our area approached us for part-time work to subsidise their income. If they didn’t have a trade, we were able to offer them some training in different areas.  A lot of farmers are often multi-skilled and very mechanically minded which means they fit in very readily with us.  We were able to offer them tickets to be able to get them onto site and to fully use their abilities within our crews.’ Mr Hort added.

The Skillset and Hort Enterprises collaborative partnership has been in place since 1995 and together they have been successful in maximising training outcomes including a highly effective engagement partnership program which offers many valuable benefits to the central west community.

Craig Randazzo, Skillset CEO commented “ We are very proud of the training collaboration between Skillset and Hort Enterprises and we look forward to working with Horts’ to continuously enhance the training offered to apprentices and trainees. Hort Enterprises is a worthy recipient of the NSW Medium Employer of the Year Award in recognition of their focus and investment into training local people across western NSW.”
