Skillset welcomes Boosting Apprenticeship Commencement Package

BY Skillset 06 Oct, 2020

The Federal Government has announced a $1.2 billion boost to encourage employers to take on 100,000 new apprentices and trainees. The fifty percent wage subsidy announcement is in addition to the existing $2.8 billion Supporting Apprentices and Trainees wage subsidy.

The wage subsidy has been designed to provide business with the financial support to commence new apprentices and trainees regardless of business size, industry sector or geographic location. The broad-based national reach of the incentive makes it twice as attractive to put on new apprentices, and have a significant impact on employment opportunities for young people in particular.

Skillset Chief Executive Officer, Craig Randazzo said this is a great time for school leavers to think about a trade career with over 400 different vocational education and training (VET) qualifications available with employment rates for trade graduates at 92 per cent.

“Almost all of essential services and high growth sector jobs rely heavily on skills acquired through VET. We anticipate this package will only increase employment and training opportunities throughout the region as well as stimulate our regional economy. This announcement will provide employers with confidence to invest in new staff but also help reduce the higher unemployment levels that have been caused by COVID-19.”

For eligible employers and Group Training Organisations, the wage subsidy is available for new apprentices and trainees engaged between 5 October 2020 and 30 September 2021. The subsidy covers 50% of wages paid from 5 October 2020 to 30 September 2021 for up to $7,000 per quarter, and is capped to 100,000 places.

“If employers are considering putting on an apprentice or trainee, we encourage them to contact Skillset without delay as the subsidy is capped at 100,000 places nationwide. Engaging a Group Training Organisation to employ an apprentice or trainee provides additional support and benefits.” Mr Randazzo said.

Skillset is a Group Training Organisation and the largest employer of apprentices and trainees in western NSW. As a member of the Apprentice Employment Network NSW/ACT, Skillset joins 27 other members across the state who collectively employ over 6,500 apprentices and trainees.
